John Murtha is a 38-year veteran of the hospitality industry with more than 19 years experience as general manager of urban and resort hotels in the United States and Caribbean. His professional experience includes operational positions in food and beverage, rooms, accounting and marketing.
A Massachusetts native, Murtha graduated cum laude from the University of New Hampshire Hotel Administration program in 1975 and was elected to Eta Sigma Delta in 2007.
Twenty years of Murtha’s hospitality career was spent with Sonesta International Hotels Corp. at the company’s properties in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Portland, Maine; Curacao, Netherlands Antilles; and Bermuda. He also functioned as Sonesta’s corporate director of advertising from 2002 to 2005. Since 2007, Murtha has been general manager of Boston’s Omni Parker House, the longest continuously operating hotel in the United States.
Murtha is a chairman emeritus of the Massachusetts Lodging Association, where he is currently chair of the Nominating and By-Laws Review Committees as well as co-chair of MLA’s Political Action Committee. He is a past-chairman of the New England Inns and Resorts Association and has been an adjunct instructor in destination marketing and hospitality management at Boston University’s School of Hospitality Administration for 12 years. He is also a member of the University of New Hampshire Hospitality Industry Leadership Council and Advisory Board.
