Hot Openings: InterConti’s historic London hotel

InterContinental London Westminster is now open in the former Queen Anne’s Chambers, which served as a government building.

Architects Dexter Moren Associates led the six-year redevelopment project, and RPW Design handled the interiors. The building, which is adjacent to New Scotland Yard and the Ministry of Justice, was originally constructed as a hospital in the 1800s and has been used as an office space with retail on the ground floor.

The new hotel has 256 rooms on six floors, including studios, one-bedroom suites and a rooftop penthouse.

The ground floor now has the reception area, concierge, lobby lounge, Emmeline’s lounge, and an American-inspired smokehouse and pub with a separate entrance.

A new porte cochère was built within the existing façade. The reception area is an atrium with a triangular glass skylight. The redevelopment included the installation of eight new elevators within two new elevator cores.

Structural modifications and two meters of excavation across the lower ground floor made room for conference facilities and a 24-hour gym. A grand elliptical staircase leads to the lower ground floor.
