Hot Openings: W debuts in Switzerland

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has opened W Verbier, the brand’s first ski and alpine resort.

W Verbier and The Residences at W Verbier are owned by Swiss-based Les Trois Rocs and located next to the main Médran gonzola, at the foot of the Verbier ski slopes. The properties offer ski-in, ski-out access.

Concrete Architectural Associates drew inspiration from the way a ski carves through snow in designing W Verbier, which occupies four wooden chalet-style buildings connected by a glass atrium. The resort offers 123 guestrooms, including an Extreme Wow Suite, and 15 W-branded Residences. All guestrooms and suites include a fireplace and a balcony overlooking the mountains; rustic interiors contrast with sleek furnishings.

Spanish Chef Sergi Arola, who holds two Michelin stars, has his first restaurant in Switzerland at W Verbier. Restaurant Arola’s menus blend Swiss produce and Arola’s own Catalan roots. Executive Chef Torsten Sallstrom oversees the restaurant’s two venues: Arola, with shared plates and an outdoor terrace, and Eat-Hola, with a menu of tapas that change daily and a bar that faces the open, marble-clad kitchen.

The W Living Room includes the Carve bar, with DJs and cocktails. W Cafe is located directly across from of the Médran Gondola, while Off-Piste offers après-ski refreshment with a DJ.

Off the slopes, W Verbier offers a fitness facility, three W Studios for events, and an Away Spa with nine treatment rooms, a sauna, a hammam, a whirlpool, and an indoor/outdoor pool deck with a bar.
