What’s Hot: Pestana adds an art district in Portugal

Group Pestana says its Pousada of Cascais in Portugal will be the first hotel in Europe to have its own art district.

To reflect that, the property has a new name: Pousada Cascais Cidadela Historic Hotel & Art District.

In trying to reuse as many spaces of the Citadel as possible, the art district features six galleries, including the country’s first “raw art” gallery, and six open studios. The hotel also offers six rooms created by resident artists, seven site-specific installations and an art concierge to guide visitors through the hotel, studios and exhibitions.

The Cidadela Art District will have six simultaneous, bimonthly shows as well as three annual concerts.

Sandro Resende of P28 curates the artistic program; the first resident artists are Duarte Amaral Netto, Paulo Arraiano, Paulo Brighenti, Susana Anágua, Pedro Matos and Bruno Pereira.

The Cidadela de Cascais, inaugurated in April 2012, is located within the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Luz, once the summer home of the Portuguese royal family. Architects Gonçalo Byrne and David Sinclair restored the buildings.
