What’s Hot: Nature inspires African lodge refresh

Singita Boulders Lodge has completed a redesign of its 12 suites and added a new outdoor dining pavilion.

Interior designers Cécile & Boyd and architect Sally Tsiliyiannis of Gapp Architects & Urban Designers were inspired by the natural materials in the area and wanted to update the 17-year-old resort’s design to reflect them more closely.

The first step was physically moving the guest areas closer to the river. For the guestrooms, it meant focusing on a palette of materials that is based around the four elements and draws heavily on raw finishes and found objects. Fossilized tree stumps and stone slabs form the basis for pieces in the rooms. The artwork collection includes a multitude of found objects. The tones in the rooms also reflect the rich, earthy colors of the local landscape.

That same raw look continues in the outdoor dining area. Raw timbers form decks at varying heights to create private areas. Nest-like woven lampshades reinforce the natural feel of the space.

The designers and architect wanted to prioritize preserving the experience-led original design for this safari resort. “The focus is on bringing together reflections of light, texture, color, shadows, relationships between inside and outside and the spirit of the place to create form and space,” Tsiliyiannis said.
