Hot Openings: Luxury flag debuts in Vienna

As the European economy improves, more and more major flags are looking beyond the beaten path of London, Paris and Munich. Park Hyatt is the latest brand to jump on the bandwagon with its first hotel in Austria. The 143-key Park Hyatt Vienna is housed in a century-old building whose past uses include being the headquarters for a bank.

The designers at FG Stijl wanted to marry local accents and some original features with a more contemporary style. For the only hotel in the UNESCO-listed First District, they chose to highlight the opulence of the building by putting ultra-luxury materials front and center. Marble columns accent the public spaces. Textured wallcoverings in the guestrooms echo the decadent gilding of the turn of the 20th century. Plus, the pool floor is lined in gold tiles, tying together the opulent look and the building’s past — the pool is in the former bank vault.

This hotel also points to a key trend in many luxury properties — take the best of the original and leave the rest. Architectural details are still featured, but the choice of furnishings makes these grand spaces feel decidedly modern.
