What’s Hot: DoubleTree refresh aims for authenticity

Stylish, cool and California-chic are buzzwords that have been bandied about for almost every new opening in the state. From the laid-back vibe of resorts to the urban edge of L.A., it can seem like there’s nothing new to say. That’s why Indidesign’s Beatrice Girelli, the designer behind the public spaces in the USD$7.5 million renovation at the Hotel MdR (a DoubleTree by Hilton property) in Marina del Rey knew she’s have to dig beyond the stereotypes to craft a design that felt local and authentic, but not trite.

Her vision for the 282-key hotel centered on using fewer elements with more impact to maximize the aesthetic punch while keeping a less-is-more approach to design. Layered lighting sets the tone throughout the hotel. A retractable glass wall provides a focal point for the Barbianca Local Kitchen that marries form and function.

The team continued the design outside, creating lounge-style outdoor seating.

“We are thrilled to debut the final phase of the hotel’s dramatic transformation,” said Michael Kapoulis, general manager of Hotel MdR – a DoubleTree by Hilton. “This renovation has truly revitalized the hotel, and we look forward to inviting both travelers and locals to experience all of the ‘little things’ that make our hotel unique.”
