What’s Hot: New Radisson Blu shows off Scandinavian styling

Minneapolis might seem like a long way from Stockholm, but that didn’t stop Stonehill & Taylor Design Director Michael Suomi from realizing the Scandinavian look was the perfect way to meld the location and the brand DNA for Radisson Blu’s fourth U.S. property, the 360-key Radission Blu Minneapolis.

“The design marries distinct influences from the region — the character and history of Minnesota with the high-end contemporary look that embodies Carlson Rezidor’s brand DNA (for owner Chartres Lodging Group),” Suomi said. “Many Minnesotan families and businesses can trace their origins to early settlers from Scandinavia, where the Radisson brand also has its roots. We honed in on this intersection in creating the hotel’s new look.”

Working in collaboration with interior design consultants Graven Images and with project management from the John Hardy Group, Suomi’s vision for the extensive renovation of the former Radisson Plaza centered on finding elements that followed that theme while still providing a wow factor. A domed pendant fixture in the atrium provides an eye-catching accent as guests enter the building. Seating in the lobby echoes mid-century Scandinavian lines.

Suomi took the local part of the design mandate to heart for the Firelake Grill House, which features wooden planks salvaged from Minnesota barns. The pre-function spaces continue that theme with a collection of local artists’ work displayed in a gallery-like setting.
