What’s Hot: Hong Kong hotel debuts green floor

Eco-friendly travel ranks at the top of guests’ wish lists for 2014. From sustainable design to saving water, hoteliers are under pressure to prove their commitment to the environment. And for hotels that have already made significant strides to be greener, there’s always a next step.

For the EarthCheck-certified Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong, that meant moving beyond simply using energy-efficient LED lighting and carbon filters for the fan coils. The property introduced a new green floor in the smoke-free 142-room hotel.

For the design, the hotel used a streamlined aesthetic to give a relaxing vibe. Light drapes let sunshine in. A colored accent wall behind the bed adds interest. Guests can choose acridine-orange, modo-green or pastel-yellow rooms. Houseplants reinforce the eco-friendly message. Natural amenities finish off the experience. Guests can choose from 11 different pillows that range from buckwheat to lavender scent. The property also features a green patio.

“The introduction of a green floor is really a win-win-win approach for the guest, environment and hotel staff,” said Anita Chan, the hotel’s general manager. “Our guests get to enjoy a superior-quality accommodation and the reduced carbon footprint means a cleaner environment while the hotel staff gets to work more efficiently in a smoke-free and refreshing environment.”
