Hot Openings: Montenegro resort inspired by history

Finding something new to say in the design for a resort can be a challenge, but the 86-key Regent Montenegro’s design team of architects ReardonSmith and interior designer Tino Zervudachi of Milinaric, Henry & Zervudachi had a specific vision of looking backward to go forward — more specifically, to Montenegro’s past under the rule of Venice and the palazzos that were built during that period.

Bringing that historical look into the modern era meant reinterpreting some of its visual signatures and interspersing some more contemporary touches. Draped fabric across the ceiling of the guestroom evokes the fabric across the top of a four-poster bed. Arched ceilings in the spa bring old-fashioned Italian architecture to mind. Rich wood tones in the library bar would be as much at home in a Medici palace as a modern hotel.

However, the team wasn’t aiming for a literal recreation. A light palette of colors in the guestrooms, lobby and spa freshens up the vibe of the rooms. Stripes in unexpected places — like the guestroom rug — in addition to more traditional uses like the restaurant’s chairs add a playful note.
