Hot Openings: Edgy cool comes to Playa Del Carmen

Resort design never used to be synonymous with the more dramatic elements of style. But now, there’s a new love for visually provocative styles that work with the relaxed, Zen or beachy looks that have traditionally defined these properties. For Playa Del Carmen’s Hotel Cacao, architect Rodrigo de la Peña’s vision for the 60-key property centered on thinking big with bold statements that make guests take notice.

That starts almost as soon as they walk in the door. Vivid-colored VW Bugs serve as a creative focal point. The front desk looks like a just-fallen tree. The Nibs restaurant, inspired by the hotel’s tropical locale, features a vivid mural of a jester figure in a jungle setting. A hyacinth pond is the focal point of the atrium.

The guestrooms have a slightly lower-key vibe, with a mostly white palette. Delicate pendant lights add a subtle flair. Glass-topped tables look airy.
