Hot Openings: Iconic restaurateurs debut London hotel

The duo behind bold-faced eateries The Ivy, Le Caprice and J Sheekey, Chris Corbin and Jeremy King, have turned their focus to hotels. The 73-key The Beaumont opens this in London’s Mayfair district. Located in an Art Deco building that was once a garage, the property’s design focuses on blending original detailing with some standout contemporary elements.

Richmond International’s Fiona Thompson and John Lewis wanted to keep the period feel of the building in the guestrooms, so they sought out period furniture, shagreen detailing and custom textiles.

For the Presidential Suite, they wanted a more specific design narrative, so they harked back to the ultra-luxurious ocean liners of the Art Deco era. Handcrafted rugs and period images flesh out the scheme.

For the hotel’s crowning statement piece, though, the vibe is more distinctly modern. Antony Gormley’s ROOM fulfills the role of sculptural accent to the façade of the hotel and Zen retreat, with no furnishing beyond a bed and only one window.

Browns and creams give the lobby a handsome style.

The hotel will also include a spa in addition to two dining venues — The Colony Grill Room and the American Bar — as well as the Lotos room for private functions.
