Hot Openings: Mondrian makes European debut

Modern design has moved beyond the angular shapes that used to define the contemporary urban design lexicon. Case in point: the Mondrian London. The 359-key property is dominated by sinuous lines and textures that look almost like they are meting up from the floor or down from the ceiling.

Tom Dixon’s vision for the hotel takes its nautical past into account, then turns that on its head for a slickly chic take on design. A copper version of a ship’s hull provides a unique focal point in one area.  IN the lobby, a model ship is a literal reference, but the standout piece is an abstract blue sculpture that evokes an anchor or pieces of the chain on a ship. A model of a submarine hangs above the bar.

For other areas, Dixon took an even more abstract hand in the interpretation. A coppery piece in the spa resembles a drop of water coming down from the ceiling. Guestrooms are conceptualized to be as contained as a cabin, but the décor is a modern take, with vivid accents replacing the creamy palette more common in those Titanic-era liners.
