Hot Openings: Kentish boutique showcases British chic

There’s no question there is a British “look.” From the quirky chic established in properties like London’s Ham Yard Hotel to the stately look of aristocratic homes, there’s a distinct look and feel to English spaces. The décor is slightly offbeat, with a few unique pieces thrown in to make an individualistic statement. A somewhat tongue-in-cheek sensibility is virtually required.

For the 18-key Crescent Turner Whitstable on England’s Kentish Coast, designer Marilyn Bridgen knew she wanted to work within that framework, but she wanted to make it clear this is a 21st-century rendition of the look. So, she kept the eclectic nature of the traditional version. Floral patterns get plenty of air time in the guestrooms. Comfortable chairs invite lingering in the public spaces. However, adding bold yellows helps punch up the vibe for a more modern feel. Zigzag prints accent some of the rooms.

Stone and fabric provide layers of visual interest.

“We designed distinct headboards, each covered in a different fabric, to create layers of interest,” Bridgen said. “Each room also features ornate mirrors and eclectic furnishings to complete the boutique aesthetic. The hotel is the ultimate boutique British bolt-hole.”
