Hot Openings: Beijing hotel shows off local art, culture

For the 283-key Rosewood Beijing (the first Rosewood Hotels & Resorts property in China), the buzzword for the design was “narrative.” The directive for designer Stewart Robertson of Barstudio was multifaceted: create a look that reinterprets the Chinese concept of journey and welcome into modern luxury while incorporating an art collection that showcases local art across all media.

Robertson’s response to that challenge started with a major statement. Bronze Jiao Tu (Sons of Dragon) sculptures flank the entrance. The three-story lobby keeps the drama going with art and calligraphy inspired by a Chinese poet. The guestrooms offer a more serene style, with neutral tones and glossy surfaces serving as the backdrop for Chinese artwork.

The hotel is also home to six dining venues, a spa and function space that includes a pillar-less ballroom and a residential-inspired event venue. “This hotel was envisioned as an unconventional haven and a distinctively different hotel encounter,” said Sonia Cheng, chief executive officer of Rosewood Hotel Group. “We want to provide sophisticated guests the ease they feel at home, yet also a place where they can create their own journey to experience the authentic and unexpected Beijing.”
