Hot Openings: Sanya resort showcases family offerings

Multi-generational travel is one of the hottest buzzwords in today’s hospitality industry. Whether it’s parents traveling with kids and grandparents or adult children spending quality time with their own parents, designers must cater to more than one demographic at a time. For Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts’ first property in mainland China, the Shangri-La Sanya Resort and Spa, it’s the youngest age bracket that gets some special treatment.

The 340-key property is home to the Adventure Zone and the Kids’ Water Park as well as two free-form pools, a jogging and bike trail, a beach football field, a sand volleyball court and a gym with an outdoor deck. In the hotel’s 366-seat all-day-dining restaurant, Chuyi Wutai (one of three dining venues), a kids’ corner gives young guests a differentiated experience. When it came to the design, the team was tasked with executing nature-inspired spaces that were low-key and inviting for children and adults alike. The neutral bedding and walls of the rooms are enriched with details like carved handles designed to resemble seashells and gold-leaf seashell art pieces.

Projects like this show creating a kid-friendly environment doesn’t have to mean adult guests feel stuck in a theme park. Consider it a case study in design that is truly family-friendly.
