Opryland Hotel icon dies

Jack Vaughn, whose career at Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee — now Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center — spanned almost 25 years, died Sunday at his home. He was 77.

Vaughn began his hotel career in 1959 in Portland, Oregon, with Westin Hotels. He was hired as general manager of the Opryland Hotel and Convention Center two years before construction began on the first phase of the property. He led the hotel as it grew to almost 3,000 rooms.

Vaughn retired in 1999 as president of the hospitality division for Gaylord Entertainment, which included not only properties in Nashville but also The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ellie, and their five children.
