Solar installation to save energy at The Phoenician

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has partnered with NRG Energy’s subsidiary NRG Renew to install solar panels at The Phoenician in Scottsdale, Arizona. The installation includes approximately 2,000 photovoltaic solar panels and is estimated to offset a portion of the resort’s energy demand equivalent to about 90 homes.

The installation is said to be the first of many between Starwood and NRG. Future projects include solar installations at The Westin St. John Resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands and The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka’anapali, Hawaii. Altogether, the three installations are expected to provide more than 2 megawatts of solar power.

“We’ve set aggressive goals to reduce our energy consumption and carbon emissions by 30% and our water consumption by 20% by 2020, and this is one step in achieving those goals without sacrificing luxury,” said Ken Siegel, chief administrative officer and general counsel for Starwood.
