Hot Openings: Balinese hotel to showcase local style

It’s a given that any resort design has to channel a sense of place. So, it’s no surprise that when it came to the aesthetic for The Chedi Club Jimbaran, Bali (set to open second quarter 2015), Robert Nation, principal, Nation Architects and interior designer Jaya Ibrahim didn’t need to look too far afield for inspiration. Each of the property’s 34 villas is steeped in Balinese style, from the basic style of the thatched-roof villas to wall accents in the bathrooms.

The challenge came in adapting that look for spaces ranging in scale from one bedroom to The Estate, a four bedroom getaway spread over multiple buildings. The answer lies in the material palette and the inclusion of ornate detailing throughout the property. Warm wood tones offer a golden glow. Carved pieces catch the eye.

The villas use a light color scheme to create a serene effect.

It’s a difficult balance for any designer to strike between cohesion and repetition.  Projects like this offer one take on that. Small variations in tones, accent pieces, or floor plan can make each space feel unique—even in properties with ten times as many beds as this one.
