Hot Openings: Indonesian property showcases details

Call it reading the fine print. Some hospitality projects require designers to have more than just a good eye for detail—it’s a question of starting with those small elements and using them to craft the larger design statement. For Indonesia’s The Sanchaya Bintan, that translated to a look that takes the expected elements of the region’s resorts’ dark wood, white fabric and curving accents, resulting in the “wow” factor with dramatic pieces and tones.

In the nine suites and 21 villas, it’s the floor, along with the wall coverings and the art work, that adds that detail. In some, hand polished wood is laid in elaborate parquet work. In others, a delicate pattern in gray stone provides an eye-catching touch. In the public spaces and the living areas, exotic pieces lend a regional accent–each of the villas reflects influences from a separate South East Asian country, from Thai inspirations in the Lawan Village villas to objects from Brunei, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, The Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam in the eight one bedroom villas.

Accent pieces add interest to a suite's living room.

The genius of projects like this is the avenue that they offer for designers to tell a more subtle aesthetic story. Every guest may not know if a piece came from Laos or Vietnam, but each one adds another layer to the overall impact.
