Duo launches Salt Hotels, a new take on B&Bs

David Bowd and Kevin O’Shea have launched Salt Hotels, Provincetown, Massachusetts, which they said redefines the concept of a traditional bed and breakfast with a contemporary “no rules” approach.

The flagship Salt House Inn in Provincetown opened in 2013 and the management company will add the Eben House in Provincetown, as well as a soon-to-be-announced property in early summer 2015. There is also a pipeline for hotels in New York, Palm Springs, California, Los Angeles, Denver, and London.

Salt Hotels targets secondary markets currently underserved by design-led properties, as well as primary markets lacking intimate accommodations. The hotels are focused around the communities they inhabit and strive to provide guests with a sense of place across all aspects of their experience.

Focusing on smaller properties, Salt Hotels integrates the design, amenities, technology and quality of a large urban boutique hotel with the personalized service, unique character and community connections of a bed and breakfast.

“With the incredibly warm reception that Salt House Inn received, we are excited to dedicate that vision and ethos to an entire brand. Salt Hotels will offer guests more freedom and a more personalized relaxed experience. We will always focus on the values and amenities that seem to really matter to our guests, rather than on rules and unnecessary formalities,” said Bowd, chief executive and co-founder, Salt Hotels. “Judging the industry interest we have received in new development opportunities, it appears there is a void in the market which is generating strong demand for the type of property that Salt Hotels creates.”

Four cornerstone differentiators are what set Salt Hotels apart in the industry. These services and philosophies are at the core of each property:

Rules redefined. The properties have no formal check-in time, rather each guest is contacted in advance regarding their arrival and housekeeping is scheduled accordingly.

Breakfast redefined. Guests are offered a complimentary and generous selection of freshly prepared items each morning. The changing daily menu is influenced by seasonal ingredients and is presented to include homemade, freshly baked pastries, house-made granola, rustic hot savory dishes and daily changing yogurt parfaits. Salt Hotels will also deliver breakfast to guestrooms.

Concierge redefined. Salt Hotels recommends vetted and filtered dining experiences, local attractions and activities. Upon check-in guests receive a curated, customized local map with Kevin and David’s top recommendations.

Amenities redefined. Amenities include custom mattresses, luxury bedding and hand-selected bath amenities.

“We love rethinking how traditional hotels are structured, marketed, and sold,” said O’Shea, creative director and co-founder, Salt Hotels. “As a brand, we are not afraid to take risks or approach common problems in new and unique ways.”
