Hot Openings: Money inspires New York hotel

Money talks. It also, apparently, has a look all its own. At least, that’s true if you ask Stonehill & Taylor. For the 243-room Residence Inn New York Manhattan/World Trade Center Area hotel, it became a dominant theme in their design for the turn-of-the-century building.

An image of a clock rendered with 800 coins makes that statement clear. In the guestrooms, images of gears turning adorn the carpet. And the wall graphic behind the bed represents the complex relationship between time and money, an homage to Edward Tufte’s work in the field of visual displays of financial information.

An orange and gold color scheme plays up not only the hues of coins, but the warm vibe guests are looking for as they leave the fast-paced hustle of Manhattan behind.

Consider this project an object lesson in unusual inspirations. Even the most out of the box concepts can worked in a branded context. The key here is curating the look. Streamlined shapes keep the punchy artwork and rich tones looking sleek.
