Hot Openings: Malaysian hotel unveils streamlined chic

“Slick” might be making a name for itself as one of the design buzzwords for 2015. You could call it the new minimalism. Eliminating excess fuss is still paramount for a certain aesthetic. But the latest take uses warm tones and indulgent textures to put a more opulent spin on less is more. That was the style manifesto behind the glamorous vibe of the G Hotel Kelawai, Penang, Malaysia.

The 208-key hotel is a case study in turning geometric lines into wow statement pieces. Strong verticals make the lobby pop — a pattern repeated not just on the walls but on part of the ceiling as well. A Y-shaped accent on the back of a guestroom chair elevates the styling from functional to chic.

A square pattern adds impact to the wall behind the concierge desk.

The hotel also features the Spoon café and the lounge 2PM. An infinity pool and a variety of meeting spaces round out its offerings. Projects like this go to show a new way for luxury design to stand out without shouting.
