What’s Hot: Zambian lodge unveils rebuilt cottages

Local elements in design aren’t going anywhere. That probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who follows the hospitality design world. What’s clear is that any designer who’s looking to impress with location-specific touches is going to have to go way beyond a few regional arts and crafts.

That was obvious to the interior design team behind the rebuilding of Tongabezi’s river cottages. For the five cottages (two are already open and the rest will open before the end of March). The Zambian lodge’s co-founder and managing director, Ben Parker and designer Abi James of Abi James Interiors and Soul Design knew they wanted to not only include locally-sourced materials, but go one step beyond and aim for a “Made In Zambia” feel to as much of the design as possible.

Sustainable pine decking provides an Earth-friendly grounding for the design. And, they wanted to be socially aware as well. Recycled glass lighting doesn’t just look pretty – it’s made in a workshop that employs single mothers.
