Hot Openings: London hotel pays tribute to the ’20s

From fashion to movies, the Jazz Age never seems to go out of style. And, that’s starting to be true for hotels, as well. The era of fringe and flappers is having a moment. The challenge for the teams behind these projects is finding a way to channel that without being too literal.

For The Wellesley, London, the answer came in the form of a vibe that takes the staples of design “then and now” — pieces like leather seating, punchy artwork and statement lighting — and uses 1920s influence as an accent. For the four suites named for iconic figures of the time like Louis Armstrong, Josephine Baker, Ella Fitzgerald and Winston Churchill, the look is more focused on that influence, with period-style photographs and other accessories.

The 36-key hotel also features a humidor, the Oval restaurant, the Crystal Bar and the Jazz Room. Consider this a case study in a 21st centure way of theming. It’s all about keeping a light touch with period elements and making sure the modern traveler finds the spaces inviting.
