Hot Openings: Paris hotel celebrates modern culture

Paris will always have a place in the public mind as the home of Belle Epoque grandeur. All well and good, but ask the Experimental Group and designer Dorothée Meilizchion what drives the design for the 37-key Grand Pigalle Hotel, and they’ll remind you that 21st century Paris is just as exciting, visually and culturally, as its past incarnations.

Wallpaper designs in some rooms evoke city lights. A brass triptych mirror in one guestroom continues that theme. Color and texture combine to bring to life a thoroughly contemporary take on Parisian style. Deep tones in the public spaces lend them a richness and elegance that appeals to today’s guests. The Grand Pigalle Wine & Dine (part of the hotels bed and beverage concept) has a polished flair.

Deep tones add sophistication.

Projects like this go to show that with “local” being as much of a buzzword as it is, it’s still up to designers to find a way of sending that message that feels new and fresh.  And, that starts with taking into account not only a city’s historical roots, but its current vibe.
