What’s Hot: California hotel unveils redux

The days of rustic-chic meaning humble-but-comfortable surroundings and worn-in finishes are over. Today’s version has moved upscale. Even the most inviting ranch- and rustic-inspired spaces need to bring a touch of luxe.

Arya Group Inc.’s multimillion-dollar renovation of Bernardus Lodge & Spa is a case in point. The 57-key Carmel Valley, California, hotel’s repositioning called for a vibe that married ranch-derived ease and an indulgent sense of texture and color that enhanced the escapist surroundings. Vineyard views and outdoor fireplaces add atmosphere to the spaces. French oak floors and Italian stonework reinforce the luxurious side of the design narrative.

In the guestrooms, nature-inspired paintings keep up the theme. Patterned accents layer in both visual detail and a more cosmopolitan look. Neutral tones create a serene effect. The hotel’s renovation also includes a new restaurant, additions to the spa and expanded wedding and event spaces.
