Hot Openings: Amsterdam hotel writes its story

A strong design narrative is a must for any cool hotel. For Ink Hotel Amsterdam, that narrative has a distinctly literary bent. Everything about the 149-key property is conceptualized as a chapter in a book.

That starts the moment guests walk in. Design for the entrance takes inspiration from the canal houses where the hotel is located and the former printing house De Tijd. The bookish tale gets a more literal rendition in the Pressroom dining venue. The bar and restaurant uses old-school typewriters and ink bottles as the jumping-off point for the décor.

The guestrooms take a more subtle approach to the theme. Chalkboard paintings add visual interest. Pilllow buttons get a boost from images of Amsterdam canal houses.

Projects like this point to a new approach for themed hotels. Details count in telling a story that’s interesting without being kitsch.
