What’s Hot: San Francisco hotel debuts overhaul

Renovation is the name of the game for many of today’s hottest projects. Cool design doesn’t have to be the sole province of ground-up developments. Designers are finding more new ways than ever to put a fresh spin on existing spaces.

The multi-phase renovation at The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco, is a case in point. HBA’s vision for the refurbishment at the 336-key property started with the city’s fog and the sea. Steely blues and grays form the backdrop for the design. The cultural side of the city gets airtime in abstract art inspired by the ballet and the local shopping scene.

“The new guestroom design draws inspiration from San Francisco’s Wilkes Bashford — one of the city’s iconic luxury department stores — and the legacy of former Mayor Willie Brown, renowned for his famous suits,” said Kathleen Dauber, HBA principal designer. “The suiting aesthetic can be found in the specially woven pillows, the layering of the wall coverings in the guestrooms and corridors — creating a sense of drama in the spaces.”

Plus, the local vibe still counts. “We are so thrilled to usher in the next chapter of this iconic neoclassical building,” said General Manager Bruce Gorelick. “Today’s traveler is not only looking for high-tech amenities, but also a true sense of connection to the destination they are visiting, whether it be for business or pleasure.”
