Hot Openings: Goa resort channels Hollywood

Goa, India, might be half a world away from Hollywood, but that doesn’t mean it’s not the latest locale to host a hotel inspired by the silver screen. Planet Hollywood Beach Resort Goa takes that concept and gives it a modern spin.

For the design team (some furniture was designed by Gauri Khan, and the art was conceptualized by Artkommune), ditching the film memorabilia wasn’t an option. For example, in the resto-lounge Fame, a neon sign evokes the mood of a hip club in a landmark midcentury movie. So, to keep the style current for the 115-key hotel and its 15 seasonal tents, they turned to streamlined shapes and neutral tones. Bold architectural elements and dramatic lighting bring the high drama of the big screen to the spaces. Murals above the beds spice up guestrooms and suites.

Projects like this are bellwethers for a new brand of glamour. It’s not the over-the-top decadence of Old Hollywood or the edgy chic of a hipster hotel. Instead, it’s perfectly executed design that makes guests feel like they’re in a version of their own homes, only that much cooler. Consider it design’s version of reality TV.
