What’s Hot: L.A. hotel celebrates fantasy

Los Angeles is no stranger to escapist, opulent styling — after all, the film business does more than its fair share of transforming sound stages into locales as exotic as Mars or a Renaissance palace. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that Dawson Design Associates decided to look way outside the box for inspiration for the US$25 million renovation of the W Los Angeles – West Beverly Hills.

The concept of an oasis provided the starting point for the 297-suite property’s new look. “Our goal was to create an engaging and energetic luxury experience rich in texture and ambiance that allows guests to capture the intrigue and illusion indicative of Los Angeles,” said Andrea Dawson Sheehan, CEO and art director, Dawson Design Associates.

That translates into playing with warm and cool tones to modulate the mood in the public spaces. Floating backlit panels make an arresting focal point in the lobby and bar area ceiling. Glass and steel form walls that can be closed off.

The team wanted to keep the high-impact aesthetic going in the guestrooms, but with a more intimate feel. They turned to Hollywood bungalows for inspiration. Clean lines and cool tones offer a modern spin on mid-century chic.

“The completion of this multimillion-dollar renovation marks the beginning of the next chapter for W Los Angeles – West Beverly Hills,” said Mark Eberwein, the hotel’s general manager. “Whether visiting us for work or for play, our stunning new design and prime location allow guests to find a true escape within bustling Los Angeles.”
