Lungarno Collection art uses larger-than-life spoons

The new art installation at Lungarno Collection’s Gallery Hotel Art in Florence might be cutting-edge, but its focus actually is on a less incisive utensil — the spoon.

Lungarno Collection Art Director Simone D’Auria used the 2015 Milan Expo, which has a theme of “Feed the Planet. Energy for the Life,” as inspiration for “Spoon – I eat earth.” D’Auria concentrated on exploring the individual human relationship with the earth, specifically focusing on the overall theme of hunger as it applies to various human conditions — hunger for life, thought, liberty, experiences and openness toward others.

The project transforms the façade of the Gallery Hotel Art into a canvas displaying 63 teaspoons made from regenerated plastic and each standing 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall.

The installation also includes a 6-foot (1.8-meter) spoon made from regenerated plastic and placed on an illuminated wooden base as well as a spoon-shaped bench that invites the public to interact with the artwork.
