Hot Openings: Bali hotel celebrates vibrant chic

Resort design in Bali tends to offer a more colorful take than that in many other getaways. From vibrant hues and exotic plants to local art, it’s an altogether more exuberant way of looking at escapist design. The mandate for the 116-key Alaya Resort Kuta (currently open for a sneak peek, with a soft opening in July and a grand opening in September) made sure all those boxes were checked.

Grounds Kent Architects and landscape designer Made Wijaya (also the mastermind behind the Sukun restaurant’s look) turned to bright shades and floral motifs to provide a backdrop. Reprising that same theme in different ways — from the flower-shaped elements on the wall by the pool to the lush plantings — keeps that statement going strong through the property.

Detailing around the pool punches up the look.

“Our architecture attempts to provide something that uplifts and enriches the spirit,” said Martin Grounds, partner, Grounds Kent Architects. “We are more inclined toward romanticism than pragmatism, but it is critical to us that our buildings are functional as well as romantic.”
