News in brief: Dual-branded W-Element, Fairmont, Hersha

Construction begins at dual-branded W-Element in Philadelphia: Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide announced the commencement of construction for its first-ever W and Element dual-branded hotel development, scheduled to open in downtown Philadelphia in early 2018. The 295-room W Philadelphia and 460-room Element Philadelphia are owned by Chestlen Development and developed by Vine Street Matthews Development.

Richard Sandoval teams with Fairmont property: Fairmont Mayakoba in Riviera Maya, Mexico, announced a new partnership with chef and restaurateur Richard Sandoval. Through a phased approach, each of the resort’s four restaurants will be renovated and redesigned. The project will be complete in September.

 


Hersha acquires D.C. hotel: Hersha Hospitality Trust has acquired the 155-room St. Gregory Hotel & Suites in Washington, D.C., for US$57 million. An affiliate of St. James Associates, which converted the former office building to hotel space, was the seller.
