U.S. moves United Nations General Assembly base

The U.S. State Department will break its longstanding tradition of setting up operations at New York’s Waldorf Astoria for this year’s United Nations General Assembly. Fox News reports that the department will move to New York’s Palace Hotel.

China’s Anbang Insurance Group purchased the Waldorf last year for US$1.95 billion. Officials say the acquisition prompted security concerns of eavesdropping and cyber-espionage.

The move will impact American diplomats who usually stay at the Waldorf and hold meetings on secured floors of the hotel.
