Hot Openings: Lagos hotel shows off elegant styling

Forget about trendy — today’s projects are just as much about being cool five years out as making a splash on opening day. Rich textures and classic shapes inform spaces with elements that nod to everything from the 1920s to contemporary urban life.

The 62-room George Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria (which had its soft opening this month and will officially open July 10), is a case in point. The reception’s mural and sparkling chandelier add a more traditional style to the modern look of sleek furniture. The public spaces use a neutral palette as a backdrop. Striped textiles and geometric rugs in the lounge add some pizzazz to that statement. In the guestrooms, red accents bring in a more intense note.

The hotel also features a buffet restaurant, fine-dining restaurant, fitness center, cocktail bar and pool deck.

Properties like this show that melding styles together doesn’t necessarily need to be iconoclastic or eclectic. Instead, the upshot of those influences is a seamless series of spaces.
