Hot Openings: Art-driven hotel debuts in Richmond

Inspired by Quirk Gallery, Quirk Hotel, a Destination Hotel, showcases the art and culture of Richmond, Virginia. Originally constructed as the J.B. Mosby & Co. in 1916, the Italian Renaissance building was restored with pieces of the city’s 400-year history by architectural form 3north and interior design firm Poesis Design.

Details such as the lobby’s segmental arches, groin vault ceiling and ornamental ironwork staircase have been preserved throughout the hotel. As throwback to the building’s historic department store days, glass cases adorn the lobby, containing a variety of objects and collections such as vintage hats. The lobby’s focal point is an art installation titled “Pile,” created by local artist Susie Ganch, comprised of white coffee lids collected from Richmond’s coffee shops. Maple & Pine, the hotel’s signature restaurant serving artisan cuisine sourced locally, is also located in the lobby.

The hotel’s 74 guestrooms were designed with a color palette composed of warm-pink, gray, walnut brown, white and black. Historic highlights include original wood floors and repurposed 100-year-old Virginia wood beams used for bedframes. Room also include modern elements such as contemporary millwork, sculptural glossy white lacquered furniture and frosted glass shower enclosures in the guest bathrooms.
