MKV Design recently completed two new hotels in Baku, Azerbaijan: Intourist Hotel and The Boulevard Hotel. Both hotels are part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection and are owned and operated by Absheron Hotel Group.
Intourist Hotel is designed to be “glamorous and intimate.” Designed after Baku’s first Intourist Hotel that opened in 1934, architects from ReardonSmith designed the building to look similar to the older icon. The lobby includes three reception desks finished in silver metallic high gloss lacquer and sit in front of decorative timer screens. The hotel also has a library, a bar made from antique brass, and modern guestrooms with crystal embossed wallpaper.
Until recently, The Boulevard Hotel’s surrounding area experiencing the effects of the country’s old oil industry and wasted shorelines. The hotel aims to capture the efforts of transforming the former “Black City” to “White City.” There are several references to the industrial legacy at the hotel, but also includes newly landscaped gardens and modern design of the lobby, lounge, spa and guestrooms. The hotel’s architecture was also designed by Reardon Smith.
