News in brief: Century Plaza, Grupo Posadas, Park City

A Century in the making: Next Century Partners says it has received financing of more than US$1 billion to redevelop the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. The Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel, which closed in March, will be redeveloped into a new 400-room hotel that reportedly will not be managed by Hyatt.

Tulum project canceled: Grupo Posadas’ US$600 million project, which included three hotels, in Chemuyil, Quintana Roo, Mexico, has been canceled because it could not meet environmental requirements, a Mexican trade publication reported. The company is Mexico’s largest hotel holding company.

Park City dispute ends: Vail Resorts said on Saturday that it would withdraw its controversial trademark application for the name Park City as it applies to a ski area, partly in response to community protests over the attempt.

Indy Marriott sale closes: White Lodging Services Corp., along with REI Investments, closed on the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown in Indiana in a repurchase of the property that it developed more than 15 years ago. A modernization of the 622-room hotel will start early next year. White Lodging has managed the hotel since its inception.

 


Rebound in Cairo: A report by Colliers International says that from June to August, expected hotel occupancy in Cairo is 54%, average daily rate is US$163 and RevPAR is US$87. This is a 22% increase in RevPAR year-on-year. Colliers says Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada have seen decreases in tourism, with hotel demand in Sharm El-Sheikh down by 33%.

Courtyard expands in Mexico: Marriott International signed an agreement with Inmobiliaria Turistica de Mazatlan to bring a 200-room Courtyard by Marriott to Mazatlán. It is expected to open in 2019 on an oceanfront site. Marriott has 16 Courtyards in Mexico, representing 42% of its portfolio in that country.

 


New name in Pune: The Courtyard by Marriott Pune City Centre in Pune, India, changed flags in June to a Crowne Plaza by InterContinental Hotels Group. Neo Capricorn is the owner.

 


Centric in Waikiki: CoastWood Capital Group, Chartres Lodging Group and KKR plan to open the Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach in the former Waikiki Trade Center. The 230-room hotel, the first Centric in Hawaii, will open this winter. 

 


Hilton in Morocco: Hilton Worldwide signed a management agreement with Société d’Aménagement et de Promotion de la Station de Taghazout (SAPST) to open a 170-room hotel in the Taghazout Bay Resort north of Agadir. Hilton Taghazout Bay Beach Resort & Spa will open in 2018. Hilton has three hotels either operating or being developed in Morocco.

 


Guests choose check-in: The Standard hotel company will allow guests to choose their check-in and check-out times, calling 3 pm check-in and noon check-out an anachronism. The launch is accompanied by videos featuring notable “loyalist” guests. 

 


For Lauderdale hotel parcel: Miami-based Key International purchased a ¾-acre parcel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for US9$9.5 million. A 10-story, 175-room hotel has been approved for the site. Key International also operates the Nobu Hotel at Eden Roc Miami Beach.
