The Peninsula Beijing announced a US$123 million transformation of the hotel in celebration of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels’ 150th anniversary. All public spaces have been completely redesigned by Henry Leung of CAP Atelier with guestrooms available starting in September and a final completion date in early 2017.
Guest room count has been reduced from 525 to 230, essentially doubling their size. Interiors were inspired by luxury private yachts and 17 “Beijing Suites” include their own screening room. Duplex suites are located on the top floor and feature floor-to-ceiling windows over the city, while The Peninsula Suite has been reimagined as a “modern-day palatial home of a Chinese aristocrat in old Beijing.”
All ingredients at the four on-site restaurants are sourced from 22 U.S. and Chinese government-certified artisanal farms and partner suppliers. The hotel will also have an on-site greenhouse to cultivate fresh herbs.
Other features include an art residency program featuring a rooftop studio and public viewing gallery, as well as an on-site physiotherapist trained in Chinese and Western techniques.
