Rezidor grows in UAE: Rezidor signed three new properties in the United Arab Emirates. The Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Waterfront and The Park Inn by Radisson Resort Ras Al Khaimah Marjan Island will open in Q2 2017, while The Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Canal View will open in Q1 2018.

Atlantis appoints president, managing director: Brookfield Asset Management appointed Howard Karawan president and managing director of Atlantis, Paradise Island Resort in The Bahamas. Karawan will succeed Paul Burke and will assume his new position on September 19.

Turkey’s occupancy drops: According to the Turkish Hotels Association, the average occupancy at Turkish hotels in July 2016 dropped to 33.5% compared to 41.5% over the same month last year. Istanbul, which recorded 62.1% occupancy rate in July 2015, registered 36.8% in July 2016.

North American hotel bookings: According to TravelClick’s August 2016 North American Hospitality Review, new August reservation commitments fell 2.8%. However, committed occupancy and ADR for Q4 2016 are showing signs of growth for both group and transient travel.

Strike notice in Canada: A Unifor Union served a 29-hour strike notice at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, Canada. Unifor says that understaffing is leading to forced “overtime and unrealistic demands” on existing workers and Unifor is looking to establish limits on overtime hours as well as a “more strict control over scope of work.”
