West Elm to develop hotel chain

Brooklyn, New York-based furniture and design retailer West Elm announced today that it is launching a hospitality brand.

West Elm Hotels, a partnership with development company DDK, plans locations in Detroit; Minneapolis; Savannah, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Indianapolis, and expect to begin opening in late 2018.

Each West Elm hotel, part of a locally managed network, will feature local elements including décor and cuisine, and will contain commissioned artwork. The company says it’s operating the hotels around three tenets: wholehearted hospitality, distinctive design and a connection to the community. Guests can purchase the furniture and artwork.

“By adapting the framework design of each hotel to reflect the mood and identity of its host city, we will continue to engage the adventurous spirit of our customers as they follow us to our next level of hospitality,” said Jim Brett, president of West Elm.

West Elm has 93 retail locations in the U.S., Australia, Canada and the U.K. and recently entered the commercial furnishing business.
