W in Budapest: Marriott International announced an agreement with QPR Properties Kft, part of Constellation Hotels Holding Ltd., to introduce a W brand to Hungary with the W Budapest in the Drechsler Palace. It is slated to open in 2020.

Starwood to SBE: SBE appointed Jorge Giannattasio chief operating officer. Prior to his current position, he held leadership roles at Starwood Hotels and Resorts, most recently as senior vice president and chief of Latin America and Caribbean operations of Starwood Hotels.

 


Radisson Blu in Geneva: Rezidor Hotel Group signed a Radisson Blu hotel in Geneva. It is scheduled to open in 2021. It will be developed by Geneva-based HRS Real Estate; the architect will be Burckhardt & Partner.

Invesco in Nuremberg: Invesco Real Estate acquired the Adina Apartment Hotel in Nuremberg. The property was acquired from FREO Group, which completed the development in October 2016.

 


Myanmar struggling: About 80% of hotel rooms in the administrative capital of Myanmar are left available on any given day due to a lack of tourist attractions and overly optimistic developers, according to the head of a hotel association there who is pushing to promote the city.

Schrager wins pardon: Hotelier Ian Schrager was pardoned by outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama for a conviction in 1980 on tax fraud charges for which he was sentenced to prison (he served a year); Schrager and his business partner were owners of the famed Studio 54 in New York.

Mövenpick’s fifth in Vietnam: Switzerland’s Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts signed a new Mövenpick property in the coastal province of Qu?ng Bình in Vietnam with VietGroup Joint Stock Company as partner. An opening date for the 219-room hotel was not given.
