Thompson in Texas: Two Roads Hospitality is developing three Thompson Hotels in Texas in Dallas, San Antonio and Houston. The 217-room Thompson Dallas at The Drever will be located in a former bank building and open in 2018; the 167-room Thompson San Antonio will open in 2019; Thompson Houston does not have an opening date.

 


Canopy in San Antonio: Hilton’s Canopy brand, Crockett Urban Ventures and Merritt Development Group will develop a hotel on the San Antonio River Walk. The hotel will be managed by White Lodging Services and will open in 2018.

 


STR, Central/South America: Hotels in the Central/South America region reported mixed performance for 2016 when reported in U.S. dollar constant currency, according to data from STR. While Brazil saw ADR increase 5.5% to BRL313.15, RevPAR fell 1.7% to BRL165.54. Brazil’s occupancy has declined for three consecutive years, due in large part to an influx of supply. In Colombia, ADR was up 4.4% to COP264,765.51 and RevPAR: rose 7.3% to COP154,324.81. In Peru, ADR rose 0.9% to PEN454.77 and RevPAR fell 2.9% to PEN285.34.

 


STR Middle East/Africa: Hotels in the Middle East reported negative total-year 2016 results, while hotels in Africa showed mixed performance when reported in U.S. dollar constant currency. In the Middle East, occupancy fell 2.2% to 66.2%; ADR fell 7.2% to US$174.60; and RevPAR fell 9.2% to US$115.59. In Africa, occupancy fell 3.6% to 55.4%; ADR rose 10.7% to US$108.14; and RevPAR rose 6.7% to US$59.87.

 


STR Europe hotel performance: Hotels in Europe recorded positive performance for total-year 2016 when reported in euro constant currency, according to STR. Occupancy rose 0.6% to 70.4%; ADR rose 1.5% to EUR111.77; RevPAR rose 2.1% to EUR78.64. In the United Kingdom, occupancy fell 0.2% to 77.2%; ADR rose 1.6% to GBP89.21; and RevPAR rose 1.4% to GBP68.88.

 


Cambria expands in California: Choice Hotels International signed an agreement with franchise partner Stratus Development Partners to develop a Cambria in Sonoma County, California, that is expected to open in 2019.

 


Anantara in Zanzibar: Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas is developing the Anantara Zanzibar Resort, expected to open in 2020 as part of the Zanzibar Amber Resort mixed-use community. The waterfront resort will have 100 rooms and 50 one- and two-bedroom pool villas. The owning company is Pennyroyal (Gibraltar) Limited.

Chelsea hotel conversions: Fortuna Realty Group is finalizing the conversions of two properties into the Hotel Hayden, which will open February 1, and the Hotel Henri, which will open on March 5, in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.

 


AC partners with Sandals: Sandals Resorts International is partnering with Marriott International to bring the AC Hotels brand to Kingston, Jamaica. The 220-room hotel will be part of a mixed-use development and is the first time Sandals will manage a brand that it did not create. Opening is set for winter 2019. 

 


Japan boycott: China’s tourism administration urged tour operators to sever ties with Japanese hotel chain APA Group. CEO Toshio Motoya’s books denying the 1937 massacre by Japanese troops in Nanjing, China, are placed in every room of the firm’s more than 400 hotels.
