VAT in UAE: A Horwath HTL report studies the effect that a value-added tax (VAT) will have on the hotel industry in the United Arab Emirates. Earlier this year, Gulf Cooperation Council countries agreed to introduce the tax.

Hotelbeds acquires GTA: B-to-b travel distributor GTA is being acquired by Hotelbeds Group. Swiss travel group Kuoni will retain a stake. Terms were not disclosed.

Sheraton sold: The Sheraton Madison Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin, was sold to DeFoor Brothers Development of Chattanooga, Tennessee, by Chicago-based Waterton and Marcus Hotels & Resorts of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It will be renovated and retain the Sheraton name. According to public documents, it was sold for US$19.3 million.

Accor 1Q: Consolidated first-quarter 2017 revenue at AccorHotels totaled €425 million (US$456.2 million), up 35.4%, due partly to contributions from Raffles, Fairmont, Swissotel, Onefinestay and John Paul. During that period, the company’s pipeline totaled 951 hotels and 176,000 rooms.

 


Albuquerque inn sold: Heritage Hotels & Resorts and an investor group acquired the Inn & Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Terms were not disclosed.

Dorset development: Developers in Dorset, England, have announced a £250 million (US$321.1 million) plan to demolish three hotels on the Sandbanks peninsula and build a mixed-use property including a 175-room hotel.

Palm acquires in Orlando: Palm Holdings acquired a Holiday Inn in Florida’s Orlando and Celebration area. Terms for the 444-room hotel were not disclosed.
