News in brief: Crown Resorts, Meliá, Shangri-La

Crown Resorts: Employees of Crown Resorts’ Chinese operations were charged with offenses related to the promotion of gambling. Nineteen current and former staff members of the Australian company were detained in October. They are due to appear in court June 26.

Meliá: Meliá Hotels International and Ctrip will increase their cooperation on data, marketing and services of the Spanish hotel company on the Chinese OTA.

Shangri-La Melbourne: Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts will operate the planned luxury development in Melbourne’s CBD. When it is completed in 2022, the 5-star Shangri-La Hotel, Melbourne will have an estimated 500 guest rooms with three levels of amenities including a sky lobby, restaurants, spa, fitness center, pool and ballroom.

 


Hard Rock: Hard Rock International plans to open its fourth property in Florida. A 200-room beachfront hotel will open in Daytona Beach later this year, in collaboration with Summit Hospitality Management Group and managed by Hard Rock.

 


Chinese tourism: Thirty million Chinese tourists are expected to travel outside the country during the summer holiday period, according to a report by Ctrip. Students will comprise most of that number.

Cambodian hotels: Chinese hotel company Shenzhen Win-Win Decoration & Designing plans to build 100 budget hotels in Cambodia, mostly in Phnom Penh and coastal provinces.

Trump hotels: The Trump-owned National Doral Miami resort lost a dispute with a spa owner over room rate increases, according to Law 360. Earlier this year, the same hotel lost a lawsuit and paid more than US$400,000 to a Miami paint company that claimed the Doral owed it money.

Marriott Palo Alto: Palo Alto’s City Council approved two new Marriott hotels, an AC Marriott and a Courtyard Marriot.

Canada Pod: A Pangea Pod Hotel will open its first location in Canada. Designed for the solo traveler seeking a boutique hotel feel, the hotel, in Whistler, British Columbia, is set to open in April 2018.

 


Riu Dunamar Playa Mujeres: Riu Dunamar will open in Playa Mujeres, Mexico, at the end of this year. Operated by RIU Hotels and Resorts and Signature Vacations, the resort will have five pools, a fitness center, water sports and numerous à la carte dining options.

 


Pullman: The first Pullman hotel by AccorHotels will open in the fall of 2018. A part of the MSB Tamachi mix-used complex, The Pullman Tokyo Tamachi will have 143 contemporary-design rooms with both the international style of Pullman and Japanese art and culture.

New Castle: New Castle will develop a dual-branded hotel: a 118-room Courtyard by Marriott and a 90-room Residence Inn, on Georgia’s Jekyll Island beachfront.

 


Auberge: Auberge Resorts Collection will manage the Commodore Perry Estate, a small luxury hotel to be developed on the historic “Commodore” Perry Estate in Austin, Texas. The property is being developed by an ownership team led by Austin-based developers Clark Lyda, The Marchbanks Company and Austin Pfiester.

 


Hotel Talisa, Vail: An affiliate of Laurus Corp., a U.S.-based private real estate investment and development firm, acquired a three-quarter-acre site located adjacent to Hotel Talisa, Vail, which is in the midst of a transformation to eventually become a Luxury Collection Resort. Current plans for the parcel include the development of a four-story building with 26 luxury residences and 54 parking spaces. 

 


Expedia: Expedia unveiled EPC Points of Interest, a new tool available in Expedia Partner Central (EPC) which allows properties to create a custom list of cultural landmarks, unique activities, and experiences in their local neighborhoods that can be viewed on their property’s listing.

 


The State Hotel: Seattle’s Eitel Building will become The State Hotel, an independent, 90-room hotel. The building was purchased by Lake Union Partners (LUP), and an ownership group with strong local ties, including Jon and Kim Hemingway with their extended family, and John and Deanna Oppenheimer. The hotel’s opening is scheduled for summer 2018.
