Briefs: Kessler refutes Disney plans, DoubleTree L.A. sells

Kessler denies Disney move: A spokesperson from the Kessler Collection denies that the group is looking to construct a hotel at Walt Disney World’s former Swan and Dolphin Hotel tennis courts – a claim that was published in the Disney-centric blog WDW News Today. “At this time The Kessler Collection is not planning, nor actively seeking any locations in the Orlando area,” according to the Kessler spokesperson.

DoubleTree L.A. sells: The 430-room DoubleTree by Hilton in downtown Los Angeles sold to a foreign buyer for US$115 million. The hotel, a 21-story property, is in the Little Tokyo neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles, and had been in bankruptcy during the Great Recession.

Mövenpick Thailand: Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts signed its sixth property in Thailand. Situated in the coastal city of Danang, the property involves a partnership with Vicoland Group Joint Stock Company to build a 150-room hotel and 354 branded residences, which are scheduled to open in Q3, 2019.

 


Peachtree, Florida acquisition: Peachtree Hotel Group acquired the 96-suite TownePlace Suites Gainesville Northwest in Florida from Gainesville Investment Lodging, LLP, a subsidiary of 3H Group, Inc., for an undisclosed sum.

 


Port Sultan Qaboos: DAMAC International has been chosen by the Government of Oman to develop its Port Sultan Qaboos, a waterfront mix use destination through a joint venture with Omran, the government’s investment, growth and development arm. ‘Mina Sultan Qaboos Waterfront’ is being redeveloped into a US$1 billion integrated tourist port and lifestyle destination that includes hotels, residences, as well as a dining, retail and leisure offering.

 


YouTube ad views: According to data from social advertising company Strike Social, the travel industry boasts YouTube ad view rates 6.4% higher than the all industry average. The report predicts that YouTube will likely only increase in importance for the travel industry as a greater percentage of the younger generations continue to catch the travel bug. The 18-34-year-old range is the age group most influenced by YouTube.

Gleneagles Hotel robbery: Four masked individuals targeted two boutiques in the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland just before 11a.m. Three smashed open display cases, stealing designer watches worth hundreds of thousands of dollars while a fourth waited in a getaway car. Several staff and guests were present and witnessed events, but no one was injured.
