Briefs: Hilton results | Pod women

Hilton 2Q: Hilton reported 2Q 2017 results: Net income of US$167 million, systemwide RevPAR up 1.8% compared with the previous year, and 13,400 net rooms added year over year. Results, which reflect the first quarter after the spinoffs of Park Hotels & Resorts and Hilton Grand Vacations, were ahead of expectations on in-line RevPAR growth, according to R.W. Baird analyst Michael Bellisario.

Pentahotels rebrands: Germany’s lifestyle hotel group Pentahotels introduced a new brand message (“we don’t do normal”) as part of expansion plans. The 28-hotel chain’s second hotel opens in Hong Kong today, and a Russia property opens next year.

Invasion of the pods: Two Tokyo companies are opening a women-only capsule hotel in Tokyo tomorrow. The Nine Hours Woman Kanda, developed and operated by JR East Urban Development Corporation and Nine Hours Inc., offers 70 sleeping pods charging ¥4,900 (US$43.97) or more for a stay, and less to shower or sleep for short periods.

Even in Auckland: IHG will build an Even Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand. The wellness-branded hotel, with 200 rooms, is expected to open in 2020 and is a joint venture with Australian Pro-Invest Group.
