Mid-century modern hotel meets challenges of an old building

Following an extensive two-year, US$15 million renovation, New Orleans’ Bristow Tower has reopened as the 90-room Alder Hotel.

The building first opened in March 1964 as an apartment building for hospital staff. This revamp kept the building’s exterior intact while interiors (from Louisiana-based CDI Solutions) were reimagined as mid-century modern with historic images of the city spread throughout.

This project was developed under a long-term lease with Ochsner Baptist, the hospital adjacent to the hotel (Ochsner Health System patients and employees will have access to special rates through booking codes designed specifically for those groups). Hotel Management of New Orleans (Valentino Hotel Group) will operate.

The building’s historic designation did lead to some challenges—in many instances, the wall placement needed to be in the same space as the original walls, which led to creating separate areas within the lobby as opposed to just one large space. While not typical for most hotels, it led to the creation of a distinct business lounge area in addition to the main lobby and dining area, giving guests several public space options.

The Alder Hotel employs 30 staff members, most of which live within walking distance of the property, a deliberate hiring move on the hotel’s part.

Amenities also include complimentary continental breakfast, complimentary daily newspaper and WiFi, a 24-hour grab and go market, and swimming pool.
