Briefs: Wanda continues to sell | Wynn project under scrutiny

Dalian Wanda continues to sell: Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group has agreed to sell its two Australian projects to a China-backed developer for a total of A$1.13 billion (US$913 million) in equity and assumed debt. The deal comes just days after Wanda sold a high-profile London luxury development project for around US$81 million, the latest in a series of asset sales that indicate financial strains for the Chinese conglomerate.

Wynn project now under scrutiny: A 671-room Wynn casino and hotel project set to open in Boston in 2019 has drawn the scrutiny of regulators following a Wall Street Journal story that detailed sexual misconduct allegations against founder and CEO Steve Wynn. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission said it is now reviewing a license it issued for a resort casino to Wynn Resorts. Wynn has denied the accusations in the Journal story.

Invesco acquires in Amsterdam: Real estate investment manager Invesco and Amstelside B.V. has acquired the first QO Hotel in Amsterdam from developer Borealis Hotel Group. Designed and developed by Amstelside B.V. and located in the Amstel area of South-East Amsterdam, the 23-story hotel is held on a lease and will be managed on a day-to-day basis by international hotel group, IHG. Invesco Real Estate would not comment on the purchase price.

 


Two new Canopy by Hilton properties: The brand signed Canopy Austin Downtown and Canopy by Hilton Tempe. Driftwood Acquisitions & Development will build the US$60 million 200-room Canopy by Hilton Tempe Downtown University Area (expected to open by 2019) and Scenic Capital Advisors will develop the 140-room Canopy by Hilton Austin Downtown (expected to open by 2020).

  


Four Seasons Bengaluru: Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts will develop new hotel and private residences later this year in Bengaluru, India. Located within Embassy ONE, the two properties, Four Seasons Hotel Bengaluru at Embassy ONE and Four Seasons Private Residences Bengaluru at Embassy ONE, will open in summer. The 230-room hotel component is designed by HKS Architects and Studio U+A, with interiors by Yabu Pushelburg.

   


Unbound Hollywood: The Unbound Collection by Hyatt announced the development of a new hotel in Hollywood, CA slated to open in 2019. The property is part of a broader expansion of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand in North America. Last year the brand added Holston House in Nashville and Spirit Ridge resort in Osoyoos, British Columbia and has plan for two new hotels this spring: the newly built Eliza Jane hotel in New Orleans and The Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia.

 


Choice Hotel Group in Galway: Irish owned and managed operating company Choice Hotel Group added two new hotels in Galway City to its portfolio – the 97-room Meyrick and the 101-room G Hotel. The group is also finalizing the acquisition of the Waterside Hotel in Donabate, north Dublin. Last year the group also re-acquired the lease of Croydon Park Hotel in London, bringing their current portfolio to eight hotels across Ireland and the UK.

New management for LanierWorld: In a partnership with Margaritaville, Safe Harbor will assume management of LanierWorld, the marinas and campground areas at Lanier Islands, a 1,500-acre lakeside resort and entertainment venue in north Metro Atlanta, Georgia. The group will also manage the destination’s special events programming, as well as coordinating the development of an all-new RV park.

 


Prism makes a move on Seattle: Dallas-based Prism Hotels & Resorts is expanding into the Seattle market, adding the Hyatt House Seattle/Downtown and the Hyatt Place Seattle/Downtown hotels to its management portfolio.

 


Caribbean STR data: The Caribbean hotel industry reported mixed year-over-year results in the three key performance metrics during 2017, according to data from STR. 

Compared with 2016:

  • Occupancy: -1.2% to 66.4%
  • ADR: +1.9% to US$204.64
  • RevPAR: +0.7% to US$135.85

The absolute occupancy level was the lowest in the Caribbean since 2012, but the ADR value was the highest for any year on record in the region. 

 


Scandic app, loyalty: Scandic Hotels is re-launching its loyalty program and additionally launching a new app. The new Scandic Friends program includes partnerships with Live Nation and Ticketmaster, meaning tickets for members to events and concerts and offers of exclusive backstage access and meet and greets. A partnership with Hertz means guests’ rental cars can be delivered straight to the hotels. And via a collaboration with Save the Children, Scandic members will be able to donate accrued loyalty points that turns into money to support local programs in each country. The Scandic app will be available in English, Danish, Finish, German, Norwegian and Swedish in every country that supports the App Store or Google Play.
